On the rear engine plate there is a small cover on the injection pump side of the engine with a semi pointed stud holding the plate in place.
This semi pointed stud will be pointing to the front of the machine. If you take a 3/4 wrench take that plate loose, remove it and turn the bolt
around so the semi pointed stud goes back thru the same bolt hole. This will drop in a hole in the flywheel to indicate top dead center for
engine timing. It will either be on the money or 180 degrees out. The injector pump has a small window or steel plate with 2 small slotted
screws to fasten it to the side of the injection pump. Pop that steel plate off and look inside to see if there are 2 small lines lined up
indicating pump timing. 1 line is stationary the other turns with the engine. You can bump the engine with a good starter button of you can stick
a medium screwdriver into the hole that stud bolt cover hid. and manually turn the engine with screwdriver engaging flywheel teeth. Oh that
310-D on a 1974 backhoe isn't what you think it is. The D stands for Dubuque where it was built not part of the model number.
