After standing in line at my DMV trying to get a Real ID, my original birth certificate from 1942 wasn't good enough, I decided I didn't a rea ID. For my remaining years I don't plan to fly, buy a gun, or ammo, or any other hoop I need to jump through with a real ID. How do you feel about the real ID? Stan

The real ID was supposed to be required many years ago. NO BIGGIE. I have one. Your passport is good too. I have a passport too.
I occasionally fly so I got my real ID a very long time ago.
I couldn't renew my driver's license this year because I'm over 75. So I had to go the DMV for my new license anyhow and read a line off the eye chart. That's down right age discrimination if you ask me.

I wasn't going to bother either but I had to go to the DMV anyway for a license renewal so I figured why not and now it won't come back to bust my balls later, for some reason I can't foresee now, when I don't have one

This can't be stressed enough. A birth certificate from a hospital is worthless for anything but decoration. For all legal matters, you have to have one issued by the appropriate government agency. In Michigan, that agency is the county where you were born. In other states, YMMV. But it's never going to be the one the hospital handed out.

Wife and I went several years ago. Found out because she was married a few times before we met in 1983 she needed documentation of all name changes. What a major pain. We still haven’t done to this day.

The phone company is not a government agency. I would draw no conclusions based on their requirements. Real ID and enhanced drivers licenses come from the government, not the phone company. The fact that California would not take it should be a clue. Without having seen either of them, I will continue to say you must get one, for these purposes, from the appropriate government agency. I did and had no issues, it took me 5 minutes. I'm not a fan of waiting in line and being told to go away and come back with proper credentials. If you can get away with cutting those corners, more power to you. I wouldn't bother to try, but then, I already have what I need.

That's where I ended up on my first time about a year ago, Stan. Then, this year, while planning an Alaska fishing trip, I decided I needed to go back to the DMV with all the right stuff. Took me 6 minutes, in and out. Of course seniors and disabled get in the door first during the first hour. steve

An original birth certificate is really worthless,you have to have a "certified birth certificate" I have been through this government stuff for years.
I can't get a real ID because I don't get mail at the house we use a PO box. I do have a FBI background check and fingerprints for the Hazmat endorsement on my CDL. The TWIC card has another FBI background check with fingerprints. And both must be renewed at great expense.

Many states require eye tests after a certain age, it is not related to getting a Real ID, George just threw it in. My guess is he is peeved that he couldn't renew on line because he needed the eye test his state requires, which has to be done in person.

I have three Real IDs: My passport, my Nexus card and my driver's license. The Nexus card gets me PreCheck at the airport and puts me in the fast lane at the US/Canada border.

I don't even know how or when I wound up with that stupid star thing on my license but it is there and I'm sure they will probably not be willing to remove it. I don't need it nor did I ever since I don't fly nor cross any borders even into CA .Have not crossed into CA since about 1985 or there about. I hated having to buy my citizenship back each time I went to CA not to mention all the other nonsense they had to do when you crossed. I will never forget having an expedited load on for some place in CA and I had to go running around among a bunch of houses to find a broker on the NY or Canadian side don't remember which now but what a pain it was then they were closed and had to wait for them to open. This was 25or 30 years ago now. They were just learning how to use the bar codes to accomplish this without all of the broker nonsense. I don't miss those days going to Ca .The people were fine just the bureaucracy to go back and forth.

I found out last summer that there are two levels of "Real ID". We were visiting my sister in the thumb of Michigan and heading to visit a friend in New Hampshire and our son in Rhode Island. We decided to cut across Canada to save a couple hundred miles. I showed my Real ID at the border and was told that mine was good for travel in the US but not for crossing the border. There is an expanded real ID that you need for international travel. Border patrol let us across but treated us like drug smugglers with extensive questioning and a thorough search of our car and going through all our luggage. Not something I want to repeat. I'll bring my passport from now on.

"Enhanced" is the term I was trying to recall. I was told that you could cross the border with the Real ID drivers license but found out that was not true. And border patrol made it a very unpleasant experience.

I don't think I put enough of a jab in there for George. I don't want anyone my age or over driving with the eyesight that can happen after 75. I wouldn't expect anything else from George. After all, he and others are our entertainment. steve

My license was set to renew right before c o v i d. I went on the State website right before I went and saw where I needed 3 forms of ID (I think it was 3). So I gathered everything up and went to the DMV. After waiting in line for almost 4 hours I get to the window and the woman informs me that I need another form of ID on top of what I already had, because I have a CDL. I didn't feel like going back home, getting another form of ID, and waiting in line again for another 4 hours, so I told them to just give me a regular license without the star. After that C o v i d hit and everything was put on hold. At this point I'm in no hurry to get the real ID, crowds are insane right now. I'll get it eventually but until then I'll have an excuse not to fly anywhere or go to a federal building.

On a side note, at least not in my state, you don't have to have a real ID to buy a gun.

I have had mine thru a couple of renewals. Not a problem. My original hospital issued one is a museum piece. Has my baby feet displayed in ink. That must have been a hoot inking baby feet in the delivery room.

That's how mine is also, with a print of my foot. I always thought it was the real deal. I guess I was wrong. Stan

You still don't need it if you have your passport.

It's just easier....my driver's license is in my wallet and the passport won't fit there.

Many 'agencies' don't know what they are doing. I'm 83, have had every document noted & signed with 'spelling #1" for all those 83 years, high school & college diplomas, DD214, dog tags, DL, State Board of professional Engnr Registration, and on and on.....until. yep, you guessed it..........now with a 'real ID" that I didn't ask for, my "official" name is different, with "spelling #2". I now have trouble withdrawing cash at bank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every outfit accepted my hospital certificate (parents had no other), for 83 years, until they didn't. I won't live long enough to try to undo/re-do all the deeds, trusts, stocks, bonds, will, marriage certs, etc.
