I believe it was a "Bush President" who signed the real id requirement.. so, its been a while now and the deadline keeps getting pushed back several times. Cant be that important.

I was happy to renew my Michigan driver's license by mail at 74 I didn't want to go in. I have a US Passport so no need for the fancy license. I didn't need the enhanced license to renew my CPL.

Many 'agencies' don't know what they are doing. I'm 83, have had every document noted & signed with 'spelling #1" for all those 83 years, high school & college diplomas, DD214, dog tags, DL, State Board of professional Engnr Registration, and on and on.....until. yep, you guessed it..........now with a 'real ID" that I didn't ask for, my "official" name is different, with "spelling #2". I now have trouble withdrawing cash at bank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every outfit accepted my hospital certificate (parents had no other), for 83 years, until they didn't. I won't live long enough to try to undo/re-do all the deeds, trusts, stocks, bonds, will, marriage certs, etc.
I should have been able to walk in with my original DD214, and walk out with a real ID. The Navy thought I was ok, for four years. Stan

Article in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel today highlights the fact that if you move to another State, you cannot just get a Real ID in that State without submitting all the required documents again. Congress made no provisions to transfer the information from one to another, even though the information is available within the federal system, it apparently is not available to the new state.

It's like I stated before, I possess a permit to carry a concealed weapon and a CDL with HAZMAT. The way I see it I have already been vetted by the local, federal and state agencies. Why do I need to spend more money on redundancy. Just a bunch of BS to take more money from the common law abiding citizen.
Law abiding sheep is what we are.

A gold star on your DL/ID indicates enhanced security features.

I found out last summer that there are two levels of "Real ID". We were visiting my sister in the thumb of Michigan and heading to visit a friend in New Hampshire and our son in Rhode Island. We decided to cut across Canada to save a couple hundred miles. I showed my Real ID at the border and was told that mine was good for travel in the US but not for crossing the border. There is an expanded real ID that you need for international travel. Border patrol let us across but treated us like drug smugglers with extensive questioning and a thorough search of our car and going through all our luggage. Not something I want to repeat. I'll bring my passport from now on.
Enhanced is only available in 5 states. MI, MN, NY, WA and Vermont. Can be used as ID and proof of citizenship in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

After standing in line at my DMV trying to get a Real ID, my original birth certificate from 1942 wasn't good enough, I decided I didn't a rea ID. For my remaining years I don't plan to fly, buy a gun, or ammo, or any other hoop I need to jump through with a real ID. How do you feel about the real ID? Stan
I am surprised how many responses say they don't like to give the same information to multiple government offices on a need to know basis and seem to be suggesting that there should be one huge government central data base where all government (and private?) information about a person can be stored and can then be accesses by any and all local, state or federal government office. That sounds like a horrible idea.

I went a week or so again and endured the chaos at the DMV. I had an appointment but was left to wait about 45 minutes or so. The personnel at the DMV are simply overwhelmed by the hordes of people coming in to get them.

All the people that worked there appeared to be under 30 and were just so happy to be there....(sarcasm). That said, I made the young lady that waited on me laugh and smile even if it was only for a moment.

They have a tough job, dealing with many frustrated people. Obviously under staffed. Hopefully things will get back to normal for them before long. Or, is this the new normal?

Sadly, such a database already exists. It's not governmental, per se, but certainly accessible to them at their whim. It's called "google".

Actually the real idea was floated 20 years ago. I've had one forever. So there are no last minutes here., How about lthe last 2 decades.

For whatever reasons, only 81% of Indiana residents have a Real-ID compliant ID of any type.
