Shifting a Split Axle

Earlier this spring I bought a cherry 1977 Chevy C60 grain truck. It has a 4+2 shift pattern which has a lot more goin on than my buddys Ford C700 with a straight 5 im used to. I have question though. I can up shift the axle just fine but I cant figure out how to down shift it. The sticker on the roof says to go from High to Low you have to shift the transmission before shifting the axle. However I tried it once and it ground the gears before catching hard. I dont know if it was me or the truck and I dont want to hurt it so can someone walk me through how to down shift the rear axle on the fly.

If the electric motor is working right you should be able to down shift by pushing the button down while you have power applied by the gas pedal being down and then let off of the gas pedal for a very short time and then go on the gas again. That usually works without using the clutch. Practice a little and you will soon catch on. When you split the 2 speed and the trans at the same time you will likely want to shift the axle first and then the trans. With a little practice you will soon learn to do both at the same time.Have fun!!

oliver several older trucks had this setup it is called a working 5 speed the instructions are so confusing even when you are told how it works you may not believe it when down shifting loaded keep rpm up 2 speed button up 5th gear to downshift shift lever to 4th shift 2 speed to low as you shift back to 5th now lever back to 4th to get 3rd up shift 2speed up as you down shift lever next shift 2speed down in friendship gene bradley

Always shift the main trans with the aux in

high. It doesn't matter if you have two trans

or a 2 speed axle. If you do not do it that

way you can find yourself with the drive shaft

in neutral at both ends requiring that you come

to a near stop to get back in gear.

When in doubt, hit up youtube. Here are two video's put out by Eaton on how to properly use a 2 speed axle:
