Here is the mower. I have the seat for the tractor, the battery box under it just rusted out and came loose. Once I get the tractor running and can see how well the loader works, I will decide if I want to keep it or not. I can make use of a loader tractor. View attachment 115381View attachment 115382
I have a good, useable balanced head assembly, taken apart, in a box. Getting ready to throw it in the scrap heap.

I took the loader off on Friday and power washed the tractor yesterday as it was absolutely FILTHY! It’s not squeaky clean but a LOT better than it was. Removing the grime off the operator’s platform revealed a separate piece bolted on top of the deck that has the bracket for the fast hitch lift. That piece has

cast into the top. I thought it was interesting piece as I have never seen one before

I haven’t worked on the SMTA for awhile, but this afternoon I was able to work on it long enough to get it running! The choke shaft had broken when the previous owner had it and the pieces got lost. He said he choked it by putting his hand over the carb intake. That did not work for me, so I ordered a new choke assembly and got that installed today. Then the tractor fired right up!

Oh, guess what?! The original hood for this SMTA has been found too, and it is in my possession!

Probably wasn’t the actual original SMTA hood?? That hole behind the temperature gauge that would be in front of the gas cap is for a “Distillate” tank cap. Maybe they actually made a SMTA with the “Distillate” option. Seems I remember someone saying you could order a 400 distillate model.
Even the TA clutch cross shaft seems to be missing, you are probably correct the TA likely has internal problems.

I would be tempted to say it’s a diesel hood , but it looks too original. Measure the hood . Gas is 38 3/8 inches long while the diesel is 39 7/8 inches

Yes, it’s the original hood, and yes, this is a distillate SMTA.
The serial number is 71986 AS
“A” stands for distillate-burning attachment & “S” means TA with provision for independent pto.
I am the 3rd or 4th owner, depending on how you look at it. I was able to go back to the son of the guy that bought it new and get the hood from him. The small starting tank is missing, but the mounting bracket is there. The TA cross shaft has been cut off on the outside of the tractor.

I got a line on another SMTA close to home. Actually only a few miles away from where mine came from. I went and looked at it a few days ago, the owner said it has been sitting 12 years. The head developed a crack so he got a different head and took the old head off, but never got it put back together. He wants $900, so I told him I will buy it. 😁

better buy it, never know when u need parts. if your not going to fix it. maybe the tires are good. 500.00 tra1ctor.

Yours has some problems, with TA shaft being cut off. This one looks like it has a nice 3 pt hitch on it, also appears to have Charlynn torque generator on it. those parts are worth more than price.

Kirk that's gonna be handy for unloading the trailer....nice...hope you are well...Dewy
I brought home this SMTA yesterday. It is supposed to run although I could not get it started to load it. I know and trust the guy I bought it from, so when it he said it has started and run well in the past, I believe him. It has just set outside for several months since it was last run. I determined the ignition points are rather corroded and the needle valve in the carb is stuck closed. So new points & condenser and a carb rebuild and it should run again! As you can see it looks kinda rough, and it needs a few things other things, a battery box for one, hood is missing too and it badly needs a power wash as it is FFILTHY

Sometimes You just get lucky...

Because of the missing TA handle, linkage and cut shaft, I assume the TA does not work. I do have a good shaft and I am looking for a handle and the missing linkages.

Dewy,
I am doing well, thanks for asking!
