starter motor problem

Fella s, I removed the starter motor from my ted and disconnected the wires to the ignition indicator light and the switch on the dash.
When I reinstalled everything on attempting to start the tractor the starter motor continued to spin and to stop it, I had to disconnect a battery connection. The starter switch is the gear lever.
Prior to doing the work, I had no problem starting the tractor, the starter worked normally.
What have I done wrong, what have I missed??

Your batteries are low. I"ve had this problem on my 1080 and whenever it does this my batteries need to be replaced or need a good charging. I ended up replacing all the battery cables and went to a truck lug style battery.

I had the same thought, I did change over batteries prior to trying to start the tractor.
Previously, I had to jump start the tractor from my car battery because the other battery was obviously shot.
But why didn't the starter motor stop when I hit the switch.?
I had to disconnect one of the battery connections to stop the starter motor spinning.
I don t understand.

Sticky switch on the top of the gearbox.Take it apart and clean it well.

Continually trying to start a tractor with low batteries, can cause the moving part of the solenoid, to arc, and stick, holding the circuit open, keeping the starter turning.

I have a horrible feeling you may have hit the nail on the head.
Is the solenoid located within the starter motor itself and can it be unstuck.?
Or will it have to be replaced.?

The solenoid is what the battery cable is attached to. Not that expencive and easy to change. When I replaced my batteries and cables I also installed a battery disconnect switch like what is used on trucks and heavy equipment. Merle

The battery cable connects to a terminal at the back of the starter motor.
The solenoid is not an external solenoid as later starter motors fitted to the fergie.
Would the problem of the points sticking still apply?
Again, I don t quite understand as my experience with cars is a starter motor with an external solenoid.

There are various types of solenoids, some mount on the starter, some mount elsewhere. while you have it off, take a good look at the wires, too. any greenie corrosion on the big wires can cause a poor connection, that can act like low voltage. replace wires if necessary, or cut insulation back to where corrosion stops, and put a new end on, if you can shorten the wire, and still use it.

Forgot the main question you asked, lol! Once they have stuck, you can sometimes un-stick them, but a once stuck solenoid has a tendency to stick again, so it makes more sense to replace, rather than repair, except in a case of field expediency.

Not familiar with a Fergie but sounds like it is set-up like a 44. In that case it is the button switch that you push when you try to start the tractor that is bad. Do the battery cables go to the switch you push to start?

if it has a delco starter with a mounted plunger type solenoid the stop washer and circlip are missing or have come apart and slid forward that will allow the solenoid to stick
