starter switch

I need to replace the starter switch on my 8n,It has no continuity when it is depressed. It looks as I need to take the top of the trans off of ( shifter cover) to access the nut on the bottom of the switch. Am i correct in this procedure?

I have the same problem/question. Is this a simple remove cover, install button switch and replace with new gasket? or will I need to disconnect the shift lever and linkage or more?
Is there anything else I should do or check while cover is open?

It really is an easy job, 30 min or so, unless yur like me and haveta tinker a little more inside. You should probly disconnect the battery to prevent any sparkies from exitin anyone. I checked out the look of the hydro oil to see if any water or emulsification and looked at the gears for wear as well, other than that, every part I take of the blue............red belly gets cleaned up and goes back on red. Looks kinda funny right now...maybe someday I'll get the rest of it done. :roll:

I've been having that problem for 10 years..

I just push it down and twist it, and it fires right up.

Once you have it off, if you want to fool around with it, grind the head of the shaft off - that little button in the middle of the top. Give the shaft a tap and watch where the parts go, as it is spring loaded. Once you have it apart, clean up the contacting areas, put some sillcone grease on them, put it back to together, and arc weld the top on again. Mine is working after that overhaul, saving a few dollars.

If I let my 660 set for more than a month.. I have to depress and twist to make it fire.. I figure it is a theft deterant (wink)

I got r dun! I took the shifter cover off, and released the nut safety locks on each side of the nut,loosed the nut, removed the switch and installed the new one that I had previously purchased.
If i had not already bought one I would have tried to repair it as was posted earlier.
I liked that the nut would not come loose whatsover until and only after the switch was removed from the shifter cover, thus not causing extensive trans damage if it came loose accidently. I did spend some time looking around inside at he cluster gears and fluid condition, they were both ok! Thanks for all of your replies, Hayman
