Starters for 401-451-504...

Trying to understand the logic of which starters were used on which tractors...

Bought a 2470 that needed a starter, thought I would steal one from the 1370 to get it home... Nope. 13 has a 10 tooth 35 series starter? The 24 had a 12 tooth 40MT.

Our 870 and 970 have a 40MT that dad had built to help cold weather starting back in the day, I think they had 10 tooth bendix installed in them to get the job done...

a 1030 appears to have a 12 tooth 40MT according to the parts books, but mine has a 1070 engine in it, I'm guessing they use a 1030 flywheel to make it work... It is deep in a cold unlighted shed, maybe later this week I will see if I can get it off and try it...

It seems some have said on here that there is a gear reduction starter used on some of the 90 and 94 series tractors... do they replace the 10 tooth or 12 tooth? Is the tooth change accomplished by using the ring gear? Any idea of a part number to look for on this starter?

I just went through this looking for a larger or more modern starter or gear reduction starter for my 1370.

1370 ring gear = A58778, 139 teeth.

2470 ring gear = A27920, 137 teeth.

It would be interesting to know if the ring gears can be swapped or if the area on the flywheel where they fit is different.

Interesting. Is your 1370 an early desert sunset one?
Both of our 1370s are 12 tooth starters but our 970 and
1070s are 10 tooth.

The 2590 and 1030 have the same starter with a larger
solenoid but also 12 tooth.

I know people have got by with 12 tooth where a 10 tooth
should go.

It is an early iron oil pan sunset 1370.

The armatures are different diameters. Are you disassembling the bendix and changing just the gear? I didn't see any obvious way to do so.

I have the starter from the 24 torn apart and am going to have a go at rebuilding it, I don't have high hopes as it was full of water. The field coils concern me having been wet and frozen, maybe I can scrounge a set.

RG, It may seem like overkill but I have a 39MT on our 730 Diesel, It came off an over the road large truck engine, probably a big Cat or Cummins. The drive gear had to be changed but my starter was a late 39 with a larger spline and the drive gear was readily accessable. Other than the bolt holes being 5/8 rather than 1/2 which is no problem, direct fit. One thing that is notable, because it is a gear reduction, cranking speed is good but don't expect it to be super fast, you know how one of those big diesels sounds turning over.

To add even more confusion to the mix... Tried my 1030 starter yesterday. 12t, 40MT... it only caught the upper 2 bolts on the 2470, and the drive gear just tickled the ring gear. when I tried it.

Some research this morning shows that a 39mt from a 466 or 530 International truck engine should fit the 2470. That will be my next attempt.
