The original subject was "Re: Super A antifreeze coolant question".
I recently purchased my first Farmall Super A, a 1951 model. Today I decided to change the antifreeze since the coolant in the radiator looked bad. I purchased a name brand 50/50 antifreeze/water mix, as I was told there would be the advantage of not having to mix concentrate with distilled water. I drained the old coolant and then added the new 50/50 mix. The operator manual said the capacity would be 13 quarts (3.25 U.S. gallons). I was surprised that the tractor took only about 2.75 gallons of the new 50/50 mix instead of my anticipated 3.25 gallons. My brother-in-law suggested that some of the old coolant may be in the engine block. I rode the tractor around the farm for about half an hour and let it simply idle for another half hour or so. The water in the radiator got hot, but the level did not go down to allow me to add the remaining new 50/50 mix to put the amount to the operator manual?s stated 3.25 gallons. Any ideas?
