Going to look at a super A and seller says it will run but need to change the fluids first has a small gas leak. I'm afraid the block may have a crack in it if it does is it hard to find another block or where do they normally crack at on the inside or outside

Will run but need to change fluids first??? As long as the oil is clean ( no water) the transmission and hydraulic lift will work on the crappiest, water infused fluid imaginable. Gas leak? Around the sediment bowl? Gas line? Hole in the tank? All easy to fix. If the block is cracked it's usually just in the water jacket behind the carb. Not a big deal. JB weld or even silicone will keep the coolant in. It's a nearly zero pressure system. If the price is right, buy it, regardless.

You don’t state why you think the block may be cracked… if it froze, the head as well as the block may be cracked . Loosen the drain plug on the oil pan and see what comes out. Those blocks are not hard to find if you decide to go that route.

Good point.... I wonder why he thinks it's cracked??

Well he says to drain all fluids and replace makes me wonder if something is wrong with the block

Not meaning to sound cantankerous, but if the seller says it will run, and I cannot hear it run I would not be interested. It sounds to me like the seller is tweaking the phrase "ran when parked".

That's an odd statement. Don't know if he thinks he's hiding something, is having trouble letting go, or thinks you're stupid maybe? If it's cheap enough, it might be worth the risk.

Super A blocks are common. Between Super A's, Cs, Super Cs, 100's, 200's, 130's, 230's and 140's, there are hundreds of thousands of possibilities for replacement blocks. They'll all work.

I would leave 140 and 240 out of that list.

Look behind the carburetor. That is a common place I have seen cracks.

Well I bit the bullet and bought the tractor and it had been setting a few years but it all checking out good had water in it and the oil was old but clean working on the fuel system probably crank it today. Where do I check the steering transmission and rear end oil and what kind of oil goes in it. Thanks for all the help

90 wt gear oil transmission level is on the left side of the transmission down on the lower part about in line with the brake rod. bottom pans have square drive plugs just above the final pans. should be plugs in the steering box one on top and one lower "the drain" and one a little above the bottom one is the full mark

Engine oil is just 30 WHD. You understand that there was no power steering on the Super A. I understand that the best hydraulic oil would be transmission fluid.

Ok got it running and it purrs like a kitten but I can't get the oil canister to quit leaking of course I put a new filter in it and put the new gasket on it. I put the filter in with the long end down is this correct? I can't figure out what's wrong

The old Oring is likely still in the mount bracket. If you looked in there and saw steel, it was really hardened rubber Pick it out with a sharpened screw driver and a light hammer, don't mar the real groove. They always leak with 2 rings. Jim

Thank you yeah I got the old one out cleaned the groove good just seems like the new one isn't fitting in the groove good
