DISTRIBUTOR. Page 87
If you are experiencing ignition trouble, first turn on ignition. Remove switch-to-distributor lead from distributor terminal. Ground the lead. If no spark occurs, the trouble is in battery-to-distributor circuit. If spark does occur, return lead to terminal and check spark plugs and spark plug cables. If these are in good condition, remove distributor cap. Wipe out the cap thoroughly with a clean rag, making sure ventilator holes are open. Inspect cap carefully; if cracks are found, replace cap with a new one.

Adjusting Distributor Breaker Point Gap (Delco-Remy)

Remove distributor arm from the shaft by pulling straight out. Wipe arm and cam clean. If breaker points are worn, pitted, or dirty, carefully remove both points. After cleaning, dress each point to a smooth, flat surface, using a fine hone. (If points are badly pitted or worn, they should be replaced.) It is not necessary to remove pits. Just be sure points are clean and flat

After points have been installed, add a trace of high temperature wheel bearing grease to cam. Turn flywheel until cam opens points to widest position. Adjust points to .022-inch. Examine the breaker bar for free movement.
Replace the distributor arm and cap. Make sure the gasket is in place and in good condition. Replace cables. Upper terminal goes to spark plug on flywheel side and lower terminal to spark plug on pulley side.
These simple operations will correct all ordinary ignition troubles. I no spark is obtained after these operations are completed, the unit should be taken to your John Deere dealer for checking and overhauling.

INSTALLING AND TIMING DISTRIBUTOR.

1. Installing a new distributor or after the distributor it has been removed from the tractor
2. First, remove the spark plug on the flywheel side of tractor.
3. Place your finger over the hole and rotate the flywheel in the running direction until you feel a pressure of air in the cylinder.
4. Continue turning the flywheel slowly until the "5 ATDC" mark, stamped on the flywheel rim, lines with the notches in the timing hole in the flywheel cover. The ( -5 ) is just after ATDC mark.
5. With the flywheel in this position the slot in the coupling on the governor shaft will be horizontal.

6. Install the distributor body so the rotor finger arm is in the vertical position. This places the coupling lugs of the distributor in line with the slot on the horizontal governor shaft and in correct firing position for No. 1 cylinder on left flywheel side. You may have to rotate the distributor lugs on back side of the distributor coupling 180 degrees.
7. Mount distributor and gasket on governor case, making sure driving distributor lugs engage slots on governor drive coupling. A gasket must be used between distributor and governor case:
8. Tightening the two 3/8" cap screws that hold the distributor to the governor cast firmly with the fingers.
9. Connect a wire from the ignition key switch to the ( + ) terminal of the coil.
10. Connect a wire from the ( - ) terminal of the coil to 12-volt terminal of the distributor.
11. Install the high voltage wire from the center port of the coil to the center port of the distributor cap.
12. Rotate top of distributor approximately one inch toward front of tractor. (Clockwise)
13. Install cover on distributor.
14. Insert a high voltage spark plug test wire into the top distributor cap outlet and place the other end of wire within 1 /8-inch of some metallic part of the tractor. Viewable to the left to distributor
15. Check to making sure that the "5 ATDC" mark on the flywheel rim is still lined up with the notches in the timing hole in the flywheel cover.
16. Turn on the ignition on and very slowly tap or move the top of the distributor cast toward the rear of the tractor (Counterclockwise) until a spark is produced between the test wire and a metallic part of the tractor. The tractor Ignition timing is done
17. Tighten cap screws holding distributor to governor case.
18. Install the two wires spark plug into the distributor cap. Left-hand spark plug wire must be installed in upper distributor cap terminal outlet.
19. Upper distributor cap port goes to spark plug on flywheel side and lower distributor cap port goes to the spark plug on pulley side.

CAUTION: Whenever adjustments are made on the tractor engine, remove the spark plug cables from spark plugs or remove coil to distributor wire and also remove battery ground cable to prevent accidental starting
