transmission in 9N

I have a 1942 9N and it has a 3 speed trany
and I would like to know if it can be replaced by
an 4 speed or high lo from a newer year

DWE.........changing from a 3-speed tranny to a 4-speed 8N tranny requires the WHOLE tranny housing. Changing the "guttz" just don't do it. Completely different design.

That is why the dealer installed "Sherman" aux trannys are so popular and desirable. Even then, Sherman's need the 3-speeed tranny to have a "helical" input gear. Early 9N's have non-compatible straight-cut gears. There are replaceable "helix" gear sets available.

BTW, yer 9N engine is a ready replacement fitments to the whole 8N tractor.........Dell

If you are interested, I have the (whole thing) out of a 47n, works and will sell cheap, shipping might be a problem because of the weight, depends where you are from here. E-mail if you are interested. Can send pictures.

You would need to replace the whole transmission and the steering gear assembly including the dash and battery box. Then your throttle controls and wiring would need to modified. With all the work and expense you might as well buy an 8N.

You can install an auxillary transmission much easier, assuming the transmission has the helical cut gear as previously mentioned. This is the gear that the transmission input shaft drives at the front of the transmission. If it doesn't, you will need to disassemble the transmission to install it, not a quick job.
