Well Duh

Got to thinking yesterday I needed a little pick me up so I decided to fire up my favorite M. No luck. Pulled the dist cap to clean the contacts, rotor and points. Still no go. Pulled the fouled plugs and put in two new ones. Still no go. I'm plum irritated now and the better half call's me to supper so I call it a day.

This morning while getting ready for church I picked up the flannel I was wearing yesterday to move it and noticed something in the pocket. Would you believe a tractor won't crank if it's rotor button is in your shirt pocket? Lol Put it in after church and she fired up as soon as I pulled the switch.

Figured you guys might need a laugh.

Why won t it crank without the rotor?

Richard, Won't crank is the south means it won't start. I heard a lot different terms the last 10 years
trouble shooting tractor problems for JD. From Canada to US deep south, East to West Germany and even
Russia people say same things a lot of different ways! I understand well why you asked. DW

I"ve got one almost as Bad!! Brought home a new to me 37ar, started fine for old owner, got it home, un strapped, turned on gas, now mind u this is a hand start. Pulled and pulled until I passed out from exhaustion. Father in law shows up(Has not one ounce of mechanical ability), Says "Did you turn gas on" Gave him a dirty look like "What do you think I'm stupid" So he goes and fiddles with gas, My 12 yr old son goes over and pulls flywheel, pop pop pop. Stupid me thought the fuel valve was like needle and seat type when it was really the quarter turn type. I had turned gas off. He'll never let me live that down.

Yep. I actually busted out laughing. The better half gave me a funny look till I explained.

Helped a neighbor put a new-used engine in a pickup. When it was time to start it we found the starter was bad. The starter off the old engine was different so we decided to pull it with a tractor. I have a circle drive around the grain bins. We went around there over 10 times stopping to check this and that. Finally I stopped and asked him if the key switch was on, he got a funny look on his face, we pulled it about 10 feet and was running. Never have let him forget that one.

Neighbor wondered why his 706 gas would only
fire on 1 cylinder after he put in new points
& condenser & plugs.

Told him I'd come down & have a look.
Well, the coil wire was in the #2 plug wire
hole & the #2 plug wire was in the center
terminal [coil] on the cap.
Switched them & it fired right up.

I had one similar a few years ago,but it wasn't a matter of forgetting. I was feeding cattle out in the field with a gas tractor and had trouble with the front unloading wagon. While I was working on the wagon,the cattle started licking on the cap and wires. When it wouldn't start,I looked and saw plug wires pulled out of the cap.

I put them back and it still wouldn't fire. I saw my son pull up to the corner and flagged him down to help me with it. We towed it and no fire. The center pin in the cap is spring loaded on it. They had pulled the cap up just enough apparently for that pin to come out and get broken off so there was nothing left to make contact with the rotor.

I found the little piece and stuck it back in with some electrical grease to make it stay long enough to get the cap back down on it. It's still running that way. When it finally gives out and quits on me,I hope I remember what happened so I don't spend an hour looking for the problem again. LOL

Similar problem but different vehicle. Shortley after we got married had a car that wouldn't start, I brought A truck home from work to pull it put new bride in car I drove truck,no go. After a while I asked her what gear she had it in (stick shift) "I didn't have it in gear. Teenage bride.
