How do you determine if rings are worn out? Farmall A. Motor wasn't stuck but about half the valves were. We took care of that ,put the head back on and it smoked terrible. Looked in the plug holes and saw a large amount of oil. Pulled the head back off, pulled the pistons, all 4 had dirty, stuck oil rings. Cleaned those up, reinstalled. Fired it up ran great,no smoke......for a couple minutes, now it's smoking as bad as before 🤔. When we reinstalled the pistons the ring end gap was really close.

I will tell the story about my brother re ringing a 318 Duster. Honed and looked good, it smoked so bad it looked like a Farmal. He pulled the heads and scuffed the cylinder bores with Comet. It worked, he was 16, I would not believe it would work but I did. ( now it is a 340 with a turbo)

Chrysler slant 6 cylinders would smoke in new windrowers as not loaded heavy enough. Cure was to cover radiator running stationary and get it hot. Feed it some amount of Bon Ami down the carburetor to wear the rings in.

I would think honing and good cross hatch pattern would help, that is if the rings aren't worn too far.

Do you have manual that tells what the ring gap should be? Easy enough to measure with the rings in the cylinder with feeler gauges.

put the old ring in the bottom of the cylinder where takes place . then measure the ring end gap. 3-4 thou. you need for every inch of bore, when new sleeves and pistons and rings are installed . so if you have 20-30 thou. down there you are going to have more when the ring is moved to the top under the wear point. if you have new rings do this comparison with the new ring then you see how much the old rings are worn. and when the rings are stuck in the grooves how do you not expect it to smoke. the rings new to expand out ward into the cylinder. not be glued in the piston groove where they do no good.

and also the snap ring open ends need to be on the bottom not the top. plus check the wristpin bushings for looseness. plus there is a check for ring land grooves,.003 is about max with a new ring and feeler guage. as you dont want the top ring working in a worn groove. plus it will wear the groove more and more. plus u need a good crosshatch of 45 degrees.

Rust, the rings are not stuck in the grooves. All 4 on each piston are loose and springy 😁. Sleeves appeared to have a nice cross hatch. They looked exactly like every other one we have looked in.

Not sure where to find this info but there is a measurement for worn rings and how thick they should be so you know how much of the rings have worn off

well thats good then, go about checking to see how worn them rings are and tell us u have for a ring end gap. as an example for a 3inch bore 3x4 =12 so 12 is your spec. say u have 20-30 gap well u know for daarrn sure those rings are worn out. and having used worn rings in and out of a hole , no way they will seat. and make sure they are not upside down and orientated. and that oil ring sure dont look like its free.

In the picture the oil ring was still stuck,we cleaned it and got it free. Compression check shows starting at #1 ....60,59,60,58.....

Interesting note...... after running it for several minutes you can remove a spark plug and there is definitely oil in there on the piston, wait 10 minutes and it's gone 😔. Definitely rings?

That oil looks oddly thin in the one picture
Didn't get mixed up with hydraulic oil or something silly ?

Well ya, follow instructions then post back with your findings.
