Worst beer?

The recent poll on favorite beers got me to wondering: What's the worst beer you've ever had?

I've tried hundreds of beers, including Stella, the national beer of Egypt (not to be confused with the Belgian Stella Artois) and Old Frothingslosh ("the pale, stale ale with the foam at the bottom"). But the worst beer I've ever had was Buckhorn, a vile concoction sold in the early eighties in Texas. This stuff was so bad it made awful beers like Pearl, Lone Star and Falstaff seem like premium beers in comparison. As I recall it sold for a buck-fifty a six pack. I bought one six pack, drank one bottle and gave the rest away.

Of all the beers I have drank around the world Buckhorn was by far the worst. Even stale sun cooked Star of Nigeria was much better.

When I was a teenager in the late 60s - I'd drink just about anything in mass quantities. That was especially true at 3 in the morning. That being said - one time me and a bunch of drunken friends drove to some dump in New York City at 4 in the morning and bought a case of "Ruppert Knickerbocker" beer at 79 cents per 6-pack. It was so bad - that even we could not drink it - and I didn't think that was possible.

My all-time favorite is Genesee 12 Horse Ale- might be a local New York product.

It's all moot anyway - I quick drinking 10 years ago.

Strange that someone put mickeys in there. Late 60s my father was in the beer bussiness selling Miller products. Some on talke him in to trying to sell the green bottel mickeys. We ended up 3 yrs latter taking about 100 or sl case to the local land fill. That had to be the worst. it was to compete with a hot local malt beverage called country club but is sure bommed.

I have no idea what the brand was, but the worst I ever drank was the local stuff in Istanbul, Turkey. If I drank a half a bottle, I had a splitting headache for two days.

The worst local was when I was a teenager. There was a beer named "Ronz" brewed in Columbus, Nebraska. It only lasted a year or two.

Call me un-American but I'm partial to Canadian beers, Molson Ice in perticular. I know
I will get a drubbing but Budweiser has to be the worst I've ever tasted. Thought years ago that it may have just been a batch that got skunky, but my brother and I toured the Busch brewrey in Columbus OH. in the late 80's and I had a taste in their tasting room and didn't care for it. Them Belgiums can have that brand.

falstaff and lone star were excellent beers. gotta be southern born to appreciate the delicate taste and delightful bouquet of them. southern select and grandprize were two more great tasting beers. sadly, they are all gone now. the big nasty millers and buds and coors bought everything and took the really flavorful beers off the market. only thing even close to a good beer is shiner(made in texas) or tecate(made in mexico).

Year or 2 after we were married we went up there with another couple on a fishing trip.

Neither of us had much extra cash at the time so we bought a 12 pack of cheap Blatz beer.

We could not drink it for the bad taste it had.

Brought it home and that 12 pack lasted 3 years till I thru it out.

Still a joke today about Blatz beer when we get together with that other couple.

That was over 25 years ago.

Made in Quebec, strong beer (8% alcohol). "Maudite" means damned in French, got a picture on the label of some old voyageurs paddling a canoe through Hell. I think it's the beer that they're paddling in. Got about an inch of sludge on the bottom of every bottle, it might taste better if you could put the sludge on top. Seems a lot of beer snobs give it good reviews in the city papers so that should settle it.

Budweiser's pretty bad too though.

When I used to drink, in the 70"s we had a beer workers strike in Alberta, someone imported an American label called shlitz so the saying at that time was when your down to shlitz (spelling?)your out of beer. Millers high life was a popular US import at the time.

Back in the 60's a friend returned from Milwaukee with 15 cases of Bullfrog beer. At $2.00 a case you can imagine what it tasted like.

Pale ales...I can't stand them they make me want to hurl...my wife even tried cooking with on one night and it ruined the brats

Around the Twin Cities in the mid 70"s, we could get two cases of "Fox Deluxe" for $5.00. No two bottles were alike. Some bottles would be real strong, some flat, some weak, some skunkie, you just never knew what you"d get once a bottle was opened.

I drank Blatz all the time, thought it was pretty good, cheap too. This was after Hielmann started brewing it.

At $3.12/case, I admit, I drank alot of that in the mid 70's. I had a neighbor who loved Pabst Blue Ribbon, kept Papst and Buckhorn in his fridge. He served Buckhorn to the guys that came over to his place and kept the Papst for himself.

Warm Blatz, pfeiffer, Goats Breath(tasted more like goats p!ss), Elephant malt liquer (I bought a 6 pack of it, was real expensive figuring I"d be the cool one with the imported beer-I was 20) I opened the bottle and cleared the room due to how stinky it was. Also Mississippi Mud, only beer I have ever had that made everything I ate taste like a rotten plum for about a week.

Dave_Id, I had a few bottles of Fox Deluxe myself. I must be a bit younger or you had a better store. We used to pay $9 for 3 cases. I suppose it was bad beer, but we sure had a lot of fun running around Benton and Sherburn counties with 3 cases (or some fraction of 3 cases) in the trunk.

This thread started with Buckhorn. Another beer that has some memorable nights. I remember in college arguing with a friend that beer was beer as I drank my buckhorn. He had me do a blind comparison with high life. Was the last Buckhorn that I ever had.

Had a case of Steinhaus once. We snuck it into a movie theater during my freshman year of college in back packs. Had it all lined up in front of our seats. I probably had 2 or 3 when a friend got up to use the bathroom. He bumped a bottle and the domino effect took over. They all fell and started rolling down to the front of the theater. It was pretty funny listening to them roll down a concrete slope and the occasional "tink" as they bumped off seat posts. Must have been God looking our for me, as I never had such a headache, and after only 2 or 3!

That said, my least favorite beer is Heineken.

Hay, I will agree with you on Shiner, I sure wish it was more available here in Minnesota.

Fortunately I travel down south quite a bit.

The worst i have tasted recently was some vile Budweiser that had oyster juice added. Their on some crazy kick of adding stuff out here (bloody mary mix, lime juice, etc), but this was foul!
When I was a teen, the pl' man had a thing for cheap beers, so I drank a lot of "red, White and Blue", "Iron City", "Black Label", Milwalkee's Best and other cheap beers...
...I kinda like 'em. ICE ICE COLD on a hot day, they go down without much bite.

Well Coors is now all owned by one of your dang Canadian brewers! I guess you got to be Irish to like it but some of that ale of theirs is pretty nasty to me about like some of the mexican river p*** beer.

When I was homebrewing, I had a batch that was undrinkable. Tried a bottle, drank half of it, and within about 10 minutes had a splitting headache. Didn't mind pouring it down the toilet, since it tasted like that's where it belonged anyway.

Back in my college days, over in Terre Haute, IN [that's French for "terrible hole," and if you ever smelled the odor of the Commercial Solvents plant that blew through town, you'd agree], a couple of college friends and I made the rounds of the bars and package liquor stores in the region, including Marshall [Circle Bar...was that it?] and Paris, IL [Don and Katy's Steak House, maybe??]. We tried a lot of product, and were particularly fond of Miller Malt Liquor--in the red can--but we must've been the exception, as it didn't seem to last long on the market. But it was worlds better than Schlitz Malt liquor...and the ONLY beer in green bottles I ever liked was Schoenling Little Kings, out of Cincinnati.

About the worst we ever had was called Goebel's...had an aftertaste that approached what I figure could've only been achieved by drowning a family of skunks in the vat.

Apparently we don't have a big cheap beer selection in NC, but I'll have to say the worst I've had is Milwaukee's Beast Ice. High Life, PBR, Old Milwakee are good to me though.

Hey! I had Star beer in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It was the only thing that you could get in the whole city that was cold. At three o'clock in the afternoon sun I thought it was the best beer I had ever had. Now, the only beer that I will drink is a micro-brew. Any of the mass produced beer is not worth drinking.
Ted

At age 18, I was drinking anything that said 'beer'. The stores were selling generic stuff with a plain white label and black letters that said 'beer'. Today I think they call it Blatz.

Blue Moon is the worst beer I've ever had. Reminds me of week old gym socks in high school.

I noticed someone had it as their favorite in best beer post.YUCK!!!

Hackstein ice sucks a$$ too.

I almost agree with you guys that said Buckhorn. Its a close second. Lucky Lager was the worst, but they had cool riddles under the cap. When you got to where you couldn't solve them anymore, you knew you had too many!

I got to agree, my least favorite is also Heineken. Benton and Sherburne county is close to where I grew up. Stearns is where I was born and raised. (St. Cloud)

It certainly comes as no surprise that you guys are experts on every brand of beer ever concocted.

I imagine you could tell me just what brand of beer goes best with whatever road kill stew you are eating at the time.

Back in the late 70"s and early 80"s when times were tough, I bought some Shaeffers (sp?) that was as bad as I ever drank. The only thing that was as bad was a store brand that I tried when I was about 13yo. I don"t drink much any more but I"ve always been fond of Michelob

Won't your sister be disappointed if you don't take her out to a fancy drive thru this evening?
Afterall, it is your anniversary.

Someone mentioned "Schlitz".

Back in my beer drinking days, a bunch of us were sitting around a table drinking beer. A buddy of mine and a gal at the table were both drinking Schiltz. My buddy took a drink of his and in all innocence looked over at the gal and asked, "Is your Schlitz watery?"

Took everyone at the table ten minutes to compose themselves.

Ain't Roberto T the YT "resident Communist" as described by another fellow poster?

Never nuthin' good to say.

Good afternoon Roberto.

I had a good day here.

Tore out a little fence. Mended some other fences along the pasture.

Worked up a good sweat doing that.

Watched the grandkids swim for a while.

Now I'm gonna grill something for supper.

How was your day?

Gary

Iron City Light. Used to work in a carry-out, and college kids would buy the heck out of it at 4.95 a case returnables. We used to sell so much, the semi came direct to the store, instead of the beer truck because it would have taken 2-3 trips.

Worst I ever had was Tudor beer, bought at the local A&P store in the mid 60's for $3.99 a case. Stuff really gave your digestive system a workout.
Paul

Coors supports gun control, eh? Well that puts them at the worst on the list for me. I"ll NEVER drink another one.
Mr. Bob

Yeah Gary,I didn't realize he was "special" (that's what his mother always told him)otherwise I wouldn't have been so hard on him.

Carlings Black Label, we got a whole pallet full out of the Da Nang warehouse. They begged us to take it and boy was that some skunky stuff. This was 1968 and we still had to use a punch type can opener on em.

double r that one definitely gets my vote especially if you're up country Carling Black label in rusty tin cans with a church key hanging on your neck beats drinking swamp water barely. My vote for number one worst I haven't found anything that touches it bar none Ewwwhhh.

I've gotta vote for Black Label as the worst also.
La Maddelena, Sardinia they choppered in a couple of pallets of the stuff. We drank it warm straight from the pallet.
It was gone by midnight but by then we'd beat up each other, the Seabees AND the Italian guards.
The whole ship was sick next day.

There was something called Bohemian around here in the '70's- neighbor always wanted to have some beer around to feed the crew at the end of the day- his wife took to buying Bohemian, because they would only drink one, then look at their watches and exclaim that they had to run. . .

He's never contributed anything other than to stir the pot . Arguing on the internet is like running in special olympics,,,even if ya win ,,your still a retard ! lol

Red Stripe is pretty wretched stuff. I'm also surprised no one's mentioned Old Frothingslosh.
Hand's down worst ever was somethin' called Ol' Sawdust. I think it was canned by Iron City for the Sawdust Days celebration in Eau Claire, WI.

I'm kind of diplomatic & won't badmouth any Wisconsin beer. But there is a distinct difference in how the beers here taste. One guy's favorite can be the one you dislike the most.
The worst beer may be beer in cans that tastes like aluminum. Mark SW Wis.

resident communist? You shouldn't use big words unless you know their meaning.

Apparently you guys can't handle anyone's opinion unless it matches your own. I apologize if my intellect surpasses most on here. In the future I will tone it down a bit. I will keep thoughts of pickup trucks, dogs, prison, momma and beer in the back of my mind while listening to banjo music. Then I'll fit right in.

You needn't thank me but I see that after I demanded some threads be removed, they were.

have to say buckhorn gets my vote . guess it is the same you guys are talking about. brown can with pix of deer heads on it. pretty rank also could not go old english 800 one can induced vomiting

You are correct about the Genny- it is made in Rochester NY. When I was a boy Genesee was one of the most popular beers around here.

I've had a few bad ones over the years but my most recent would have to be Bud Select. The stuff tastes like cheap canned beer even if it's in a bottle. Not sure how they get the stale aluminum taste into a bottle but it must have taken some creative engineering.

That sounds good.

Nothing like slow grilled, fresh deer back strap and an ice cold beer on a hot Sunday afternoon.

Too bad I have to work this weekend....

Dave

Surprised that no one has mentioned Schmidt--back in my drinking days, I had to be pretty well lit to stand Schmidt. Olympia wasn't very good either, and always seemed to give me a headache.

Almost any beer isn't good if it is too old. Once in high school, we discovered 4 cases of Budweiser cans that were in an old shed we were cleaning out. The guy who had probably bought the beer had died about 4 years before, and my buddy and I were helping his widow out, as she was going to sell the place. That beer was ugly! But over the next couple of weeks we, and several other friends drank every can. Who knows how many times it had frozen and thawed in that unheated shed. Nobody got bad sick...and it was the best and cheapest beer we were able to get that summer. Then later my buddy started working in a supermarket as a stocker/box boy, and after that our beer procurement problems were over. The store manager didn't seem to really care, as long as the cases of beer that went over the back fence got paid for!

Guinness was the absolute worst beer I've ever drank. And I have experienced almost every one mentioned here. Buckhorn, for one, and another named Cook's made from potatoes. Think about that....fermented potatoes. That's worse than rotten soybeans. The Guinness had a plastic thing inside the bottle that looked like a discarded tampon inserter. Do you think that made the beer taste so bad? I never have heard any explanation for the plastic piece to be there.

Had a college roommate from Philadelphia who said that you shouldn't even wash your hair in Iron City...he swore it'd make your hair fall out.

As you can soon tell I'm not a beer drinker so due to my limited exposure I'm just making a wild guess but I think 'The Olde Grey Mare' would make the bottom of anyone's list.
Does anybody remember ‘Greasy Richard’? (Spelling, on purpose) It was brewed in St. Louis back in the forties and sponsored the Cardinals broadcasts by Harry Carey.

Last Hallowen , our copy machine rep dropped off this pumpkin beer. I tried it. Spit it out. Pumpkin and beer were not made to go together. The taste in my mouth went away in about two weeks.

I know this is an old queue but the worst in the world I ever tried to drink was Natural Light. Needs to be poured back into the horse. Also Busch Bavarian -- pure headache beer -- in fact any of the Busch beers did that to me. Budweiser tastes like burnt cork. Never developed a liking for it. Keystone and Keystone Light tasted like water but were cheap.

Give me a Leinie any day.

Pat

I find that comment just as offending as some of Robertos. When you have someone in your fanmily that is mentally retarded, you see things quite a bit differently.

Bill, I've always wondered about those pumpkin beers. I've always been reluctant to try them. They just didn't sound good to me. Thanks for the info.

I got to page five before I saw the Carlings Black Label. Shouldn't be allowed to call it beer. David.....

Buckhorn was good beer. Tasted like coors and a lot cheaper.

Worst was schlitz. Remember the old commercial about there always being a schlitz in the cooler? I always figured that it was because nobody was buying that crap so there was always some in the cooler.

Roberto, can you EVER be pleasant? Could you just for once try to either say something helpful or not say anything if you can't do that? Once?! PLEASE??!!?!!

I have had a number of skunky beers or bitter beers over the years, but nobody here has mentioned Stag!!! Remember the Stag farts the next day. They still sell it around St. Louis.
