    Great Rollin' Balls of Thunder . . . . . .

I read on another forum that the 3/16-inch steel ball in the end of the Ford N throttle control hanxle is supposed to roll freely where it contacts the quadrant notches on the dash panel. I also read over the instruction sheet that tells how you are supposed to be able to clamp a straight...

steel or soft material head gaskets

If you were using all new engine part - block and head - then steel gaskets would be just fine. Unfortunately for most of us, we are dealing with sixty-plus year-old stuff that has litreally been around the world a couple of times in hours of use. Unless you have had your block deck and head...

How hard should it be to turn my crank shaft

Your question is a good one - and must be considered before you proceed further. While it is true that new pistons and rings in a new sleeve will produce considerable drag, there should be absolutely NO drag from a properly fitted bearing. There is a lot of skill involved here in fitting these...

    loud 8n

Ninety nine percent of the N exhaust systems carried by most vendors are the one-piece that Bruce mentinoed. N Complete carries a heavier-duty system that comes in two pieces - ships easier, too, for about $36 buckz. I have one on my N and it is noticeably quieter than the thinner one-piece...

    Engine overhaul

The time for deciding what to buy is not now, but after the unit is comopletely torn down. Not until then and after all the wear parts are measured can it be knowable as to what you will need. Items like blocks and cranks run an easy $500 a pop. Please do not decide out of hand that just a kit...

    Manifold Repair

I used flat washers on new studs and brass nuts with a brand new manifold. One brass nut stripped due to extra casting flash that held the flat washe away and did not allow the nut onto the stud the whole way. Had to put a little English on the new manfold with a die grinder, before I could try...

Carb and Fuel Shutoff when Not Running

OR . . . you could spend for an electric fuel shutr-off solenoid that opens and closes with your ignition switch. Then the only time you have to touch the shut-off is when you need the reserve gallons in your tank. That's what I did . . . Good Luck Dave Erb New Holland, PA

    oil leak

S very common leak on N models is from the bottom of the governor housing. The only way I have been able to fix this is to remove the uinit - just two bolts and the oil line - and lay the housing on a piece of fine sandpaper over a flat surface and true the warped housing edge where the gasket...

    valve adjustment

All good advice you are getting here. Mark your crank pulley for TDC and a second mark 180 degrees around. You will use these two marks to adjust all your valves, and it's easier to see on the pulley thn on the flywheel, JMHO. Just remember that getting to thise adjustments is a lot of work...

    Extra thick head gasket

Might yer noise be a wrist pin bushing that was overlooked in the original overhaul? I've seen some good men get bitten by that one - easy to overlook. If that's what you have, should be able to short out and kill the noise, jusgt like a nasty rod bearing, JMHO. Good Luck. Post back and let us...

    Plowing problem

Don't know whatcher' power unit is, but most N's like to plow in second at nearly full throttle. Whilst doin' all this, you want both moldboard tips to be out of the ground about the same amount and your two turned-over furrows on the plowed ground to be the same height. You only need concern...
