1969 IH 656 Hydro slipping out of "gear"

1969 IH 656 Hydro. Trans is slipping in out of "gear". It acts like it is low on fluid but it is not. Bring it back to neutral then forward and it goes about 50' then pops out of drive again. I read it could be a clogged hyd. filter or the actuator could be faulty. It has 5500 hrs. Motor is shot but the hydro trans has never been a problem until now. Suggestions please. Thank you.

Hello Brian welcome to YT! I do not know how much you
poked around here, but in the link is a recent thread a bit down
the page about a IH Hydro. It is not a 656 but rather a
3600A industrial tractor but apparently has nearly the same hydro drive as a 656. In a reply there I attached a link to a discussion from another forum. It focuses on the side movement of the hydro speed control lever causing problems. Also the link to Herrs Hydrostatic there. If all else fails I would suggest contacting them.

For sure first thing to check is the side to side movement of
the
SR lever (SR = speed control) to make sure it is pulling or
pushing the spool in drive control lever far enough.

There is an adjustment on that clamp that pulls spool back and
forth when going into fwd or rev. Even a loose or worn cowl
where lever moves in slot will cause this problem.
