2640 won't start

I can't get my 2640 to turn over. When I turn the key everything is dead. I have checked the batteries and they are good. The lights work, but when I turn the switch nothing happens. I am wondering if the switch is bad because the dashboard is also dead. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance, Chad

Check the wires at the starter sometimes they "fry" a bit and get rusty, I pull them off and sand them, also check where the ground cable goes to the frame. The safety switch should be checked also...

It's under the center shifter cover on top of the trasmission, if it's bad or shook loose it won't even "click" when you hit the key. If it seems bad clean the connector and remove the switch (it screws in) remove any shims that may be on it and re-instal it, try it again, some times this will give you a bit more time,,"But" don't wire past it!! Try to keep this stuff as safe as we can...it cuts down on funerals...

I had a 2940 that did the same thing my problem was the safety switch underneath the plate by the gear shift levers just unplugged it and cleaned it worked fine after that.

If his dash lights are dead it is not the saftey switch. Could be key switch connections behind battery as they are prone to deteriate behind battery. DW

To add to what the others have stated check the battery ground cable that is normally attached to battery box. Due to battery acid and time the bottom of BB can become rusty and loose continuity to clutch housing. Therefore it's much better to attach ground directly to engine block or starter.

Amen. Been some near misses around here, my sister is a paramedic.
Lucky to just have a broken legs etc recently from getting run over while jumping the starter.
Tractors with duals usually squash the most of the driver.

Yes we had one about 10 miles south of here last fall, a young guy,25, had the safty switch by-passed on an open station 4430,started it from the ground,,"in gear",crushed his ankle and made a new door in the barn, he was lucky,he's still limping around to remind the rest of us....

That's another thing that I could never understand, This guys family are known for doing that, and the live in hill country too, a quad range will roll off in gear, that will be the next accident, the guy will start to walk away and the tractor will roll over him, these guys are not usto Deeres this 4430 and an old 4020 are all they have, they were usto old Olivers and Fords that never had a park gear...

No they didn't have park brakes till well into the 70's, I think Deere was way ahead of the game with that, the other brands just had brake locks. When Deere came out with the Hydraulic brakes they were forced to come up with a mechanical park.
