560 starter

The starter on my 560 is giving some issues. It does not always engage the flywheel causing it to grind. It may do this 4-5 times before it finally takes off. It does not do this every time I start maybe 1/4 of the time.

What do i need to do to correct this?

Take the starter out and look at what you have.

If the gear inside the hole looks chewed up you will need to split the tractor, pull the flywheel, and replace the ring gear.

If the gear looks okay, replace the Bendix drive on the starter with a new one.

Remove the starter and get it serviced if the brushes and bushing are worn the bendix wont enguage fast mite nead a new bendix also but you do need to remove the starter.

Even if the ring gear is beat up a new Bendix will sometimes get you going for a while. You'll have replace the gear eventually, though.

The starter drive on the 560 uses a lever to engage it in the ring gear so it does not have the same problem as the older tractors that relied on inertia for engagement. On the 560 the drive should be engaged in the ring gear before the contacts close in the solenoid. If the teeth on the drive do not engage there is a spring on the drive that will allow the lever to continue to move enough to allow the plunger in the solenoid to close the contacts. When that happens the drive is under spring pressure to engage the drive teeth so as soon as the armature starts to turn the drive will slide into position. If the teeth on the the drive and/or the ring gear loose too much of their bevel the drive gear may not easily mesh with the ring gear and the grinding noise you hear will be the result. In this case an armature that starts spinning quickly has the opposite affect as it does in the older starters. An armature that starts up slower gives more time for the teeth to engage,

You most likely need to replace the drive assembly. The ring gear will have three areas that are worn worse than the rest of the teeth. If not too bad you can get service from it by removing and burrs on the teeth with either a file or small die grander.
