Couple carburetor question:

What did the TSX-241 do "better" than the TSX-33? There must have been some problems addressed.

My 8N came with a new Chinese replacement carburetor. I have a TSX-33 core that is rough but rebuildable. Which would you use?

Thanks.

Here's the skinny on FORD/M-S Carbs:

MARVEL-SCHEBLER CARBS USED ON THE FORD N-SERIES TRACTORS

The original TSX-33 has a large round knurled splined thumbscrew as the main adjusting needle with a spring tension ratchet clamp to keep it from moving. Since the TSX-241B superseded all other N carbs, the newer Main Jet screw would be correct on any N carb. FORD UPC nomenclature designates carburetors as group #9510. The TSX-241 models biggest changes were the revamping of the Main Idle Air Jet Adjustment and the Main Throttle Adjustment Screw. The TSX-33 Model required the operator to make adjustments using hands-on turning the Main Adjustment Screw/Knob and Throttle Idle Screw. This was hazardous to the operator because adjustments had to made when the engine was hot and thus working close to the carb often resulted in the operator burning his hand. With the new TSX-241, the two adjustments screws were redesigned using slotted head screws on both so the operator could now safely use a screwdriver to make adjustments with. The economizer jet did not make any significant improvement. The TSX 33 Unit had the cast recessed on the unit ID Tag boss. The TSX-241 unit changed that to a riveted brass date Code ID Tag with the Model Number and the date the M/S unit was manufactured. In the photo, the 241 shown has the 'TSX-241-B' model number and the date code of '4 51', defined as April, 1951. The TISCO Carb Rebuild Kit, p/n C546V, is the best kit to purchase today as it contains most all parts. It will rebuild all 9N, 2N, and 8N units and older jet screws replace the previous versions.

Marvel-Schebler model & (Ford Part Number):
TSX-33 (9N-9510) - thru s/n 260596
TSX-38 (2N-9510) used in 43 on Industrial Tractors and the Steel-Wheel wartime model only. Uses the double throw choke lever as a 2nd choke rod ran to the front grille. Mid 1943 declared obsolete and Ford went back to the TSX-33 as standard 2N production ramped up. The TSX-33 carb was used up thru mid-8N production.

TSX-241 (8N-9510) - thru s/n 276115
TSX-241A - thru s/n 313112
TSX-241B - thru s/n 313112 up
TSX-241C - used on early 1952 production, cheaper construction, had no econo jet
but was superseded by the TSX- 241B unit that eventually also superseded all others.

I goofed. I have a TSX-38, not a TSX-33. As far as I can tell, only difference is the choke lever.

As I mentioned below, the M/S TSX-38 was the 2N-9510 Carb used only on the Industrial 2N and the War Horse Model for a short period. The dual choke lever was the only difference between that and the TSX-33 unit. They will interchange so you can use a TSX-38 in place of a TSX-33 and vice versa. The TSX-38 carb is a sought after part for guys doing a true war horse restoration. You might help out one of e guys by trading or selling your 38 if'N ya don't have a war horse you are restoring. BTW: Contrary to what a lot of guys believe, ALL 2N's were NOT WarHorse models. The steelwheel/non-electrics WarHorse model was only made for a short period. Early 1942 models were all 9N units. On February 10, 1942 all, and not just Ford, civilian US Production was shut down per the War Board directive. Production would then be only for wartime products. The 2N warhorse model did not come out until late October,1942,and then were only built for a few months into 1943. By April, 1943, they were back ramping up to build a standard 2N model with rubber and electrics. Only approximately 10,000-12,000 warhorse models were actually built.
