HOSPITAL VISIT

Wednesday morning while waiting for my wife in the car who was shopping at Walley World I noticed I couldn't think of the right words to describe things. When she got to the car I asked her how old I was???? She at first thought I was kidding but the more I talked the more she wondered what was going on. We went from the store to my daughter's house to pick up something and while I was there I called her at work. When we got home in just a few minutes our other daughter who is an RN drove up and she and I started trying to assemble a new plasma cutter I had just received UPS. In just a few minutes she said that we were going to the emergency room. I knew I wasn't speaking right but just thought it was my usual absent mindedness???? When we got to the hospital they immediately took me to the emergency room and about five people started hooking me up to various machines etc and talking to me.

Turned out that I had experianced a mild stroke or TIA I think they called it. They ran all kinds of tests and finally decided not to give me any sort of treatment because it was such a mild event. I stayed two nights in the hospital for observation and my wife and daughters told me tha the first few hours I entertained the staff with my off the wall conversation. Told me that I told the spanish nurse that Guatamala should be nuked and re settled by real people! :O) I sure don't remember that one!!!!

I am about back to about as normal as I have ever been and that is a few bricks short of a load. Worst part of the whole ordeal is that I have to quit eating Chockolate brownies!!!!!! And caffene. They think I may have had some heart fibrillation and that it could have caused some plack to break off and go to what is left of my brain.

Gdtting old ain't for sissies!

Just lost a wonderful friend to a mild stroke event. He was okay @ the ER and they decided to implant stents. Passed on the table from a weak heart.

Great to hear you're okay.

Makes me more aware on my age.
Hope to get the N running soon...

Zane- Glad you are ok. Be sure to follow all of the doctor’s instructions and get checked up as often as they suggest. There are a lot of things that can be done now days that were not prescribed years ago and following the rules can keep you well and kicking for a long time. God Bless and good luck.

Zane,A plasma cutter is for cutting metal,Not for testing it out on your self and causing fibrillation and all that plack to get knocked loose.:-) LOL
Glad your ok and back to your ole self.

The key to living longer is to see the right type of specialist for the problems you are having. If I were you I would make an appointment with a cardiologist and schedule the test necessary to determine what is going on that caused the problem. They can do a lot that will allow you to live an active full life. You just need to follow their instructions and study up on what you should be doing to mitigate the problem. I had a similar problem. A year later and I seem to be doing good. Wish I had never smoked all those cigarettes and eaten all the wrong foods. To late to change that but no reason to continue all the old bad habits.

Glad things worked out the way they did!I have problems remembering what words I'm trying to think of,and it's agravating.I know a lot of people have trouble following orders, when they're used to doing what they want.Hope things work out.---lha

I would give your daughter a big hug and thank you if I were you. She could educate your wife on what to look for if a problem should arise in the future. With a stroke fast medical attention makes a big difference. I'm very glad to hear you are OK. Bob

May God, Love and Bless Your Heart, Zane!!!!!!!

I bet that was/is really scary.

Loosing my Dad about 27 years ago started with a pretty bad stroke.

He was not able to open his eyes, or do for himself, after the stroke.

Thank God that you are still willing and able.

{Prayers Sent For You}

August 2004 I had an anyersim(sp) rupture in my brain and after surgery, and a stay of 10 weeks in hospital I was let go. Since then I have had surgery on my right lung, (2005) a stent in my heart (2007) bi-latteral clots in my lungs, and just last month(Oct-7) I lost my best friend and wife to Pancreatic cancer. I just keep putting one foor in front of the other and wait for my time to go. Good luck Zane, and remember ,,,,,,......It ain't over til its over. God bless

Getting old ain't for sissies!
My wife's 97 year old Gramma said it was just "damn inconvenient!"

Glad you're doing better. You'd be missed in a lot of places.

Zane - I hope I wasn't a contributing cause with all my ignorant questions on adjusting my 8N lift! Keep the pump thumping. Glad you're ok. Bill

Back in Jan of 2006 while at work, I started feeling very strange, confused, and difficult speaking. Since I work indepently a good portion of the time, no one noticed anything, but I work as a systems administrator for a large company, and found I was having problems inputting my system passwords. This was on a Friday, and I did somewhat improve, but kept to myself as best I could over the weekend, choosing not to speak any more than I had to. My wife did notice I was acting strange, but she dismissed it, but did question me quite a bit. Finally Monday when I still could not even construct an email I gave up and left work, called my wife, and told her I was going to the Dr. Withing a couple hours she took me to ER, and within a short time the ER Dr. informed us that I had had a stroke, and was very lucky to be still among the living. I could not even repeat a 4 word sentence when spoken and asked to repeat. Long term memory was fine, but short term memory was absolutely gone at the time. Fortunately I improved fairly rapidly, and was back to work part time within two weeks, and full time in a couple more weeks. They never did find what the real cause was, but have me taking baby aspirin each day, as well as lipitor, and I get regular yearly blood tests. So far so good. I was 46 at the time. I had no idea what was wrong at the time, but could sure recognize the symptoms now. Hang in there Zane.

Thanks for the concern guys. It's good friends that make life worth living. Especially after you get too old for sax!!!! :O)

My grandaddy told me only women get too old for that and that's when you need to find a younger one

About 4 yrs ago I was on the forum when the fuse blew. I went downstairs and changed the fuse. I turned on the computer and started feeling real weird. Staring at the screen I didn"t know what to do. I was totally confused and did not know where I was. Could not remember anything and I was alone. The mind/thoughts were speeding a thousand miles an hour. It took me a week to get back to some normality. I finally went to the doctor and explained the whole situation. He did not specify extensive tests, just an ekg and blood work. I have had two other episodes later but were very mild compared to the first one. I am taking "crestor" for cholesterol and an aspirim since my double "stents/ implant in 2006. I know exactly how you felt. I try to keep myself busy and not think about it. Of course I am very strict with my diet now since 2006. Hang in there we"re pulling for you.

If babbling incoherently is a sign of a TIA, I'm in trouble!

Glad to hear it all worked out. Except for the coffee & chocolate prohibition! Damn, that's cruel & unusual punishment, isn't it?!

Zane,

Sorta cut back on the coffee, after drinking the first 3 cups.

Try NOT to get so much DONE before your winter sets in, in YOUR area. It will be there next year, or at least it will wait for YOU when you are getting in the MOOD to work on it again.

Keep YOUR working environment temperature stable.

Do not start remembering all those close calls that happened to you over the past year. Things like a rear-ended accident that didn't happen., But could have if you didn't keep your COOL.

STRESS can cause a lot of problems for us kinda guys, expecially at this time of the year.

Slow down, PAL.

John,PA

I have been there, and, learned to deal with stress to head off heartattacks, years back. Think about the serviceman for oil burners, heat pumps, etc. No real sleep for days. All those service calls to do. Those guys burn out too!

Zane,

If your medical team did not run a twelve lead EKG and check you for atrial fibrillation, please ask them to do so. You may need coumadin. Usually, it isnt plaque, but a blood clot that developed in the atria of the heart, got loose and went to the head.

A year ago, my father in law, 75 years, healthy man went to get cataracts removed. Had pre-surgery work up, found he had atrial fib. Scheduled him with cardiologist in three weeks. A week and a half later, he was in Emergency getting a "clot buster" due to a stroke. He has recovered, due to my mother in law making a fast call to 911 and getting him to the ER within the window of opportunity. F-I-L sometimes has trouble expressing himself verbally since then due to the stroke, but by the grace of God almighty, he dodged a bullet.

Everyone needs to learn the signs, there is a 2 hour window for clot busters to work. check out the link.

Bruce, yes it is. Someone told me a while back that once you get over about 40, anything that tastes good - you need to spit it out, as it is no good for you! About the truth.

Very happy to hear you had a mild one -- if anything like that can be called mild --

I am sure they tried to pound this in your head but here it is again:

F—FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A—ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

T—TIME: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately

I did get the EKG and they never said that I had atrial fibrillation but I think I may have before the event. I've always had a skip in my heart since I was a young man and it acts up when I have caffene etc and it had been acting up that morning so that may have been the factor but at no time did they administer any medication while I was in the hospital. I think since I had once had a bleed in the occipital lobe of the brain after having the blood thinner they were very cautious about giving it to me again?????

I am much better now at remembering but for years I have had some problems with my short term memory and especially remembering names. And where I put that %$#%%% wrench! :O)

Think about this for a minute.......

When you drove fast cars, ran around w/ women, smoke & drank to excess, you were perfectly healthy, right?

Look what happens when you get married, quit smoking & drinking & drive a mini-van.

Just sayin'......

Makes my little episode seem like a Sunday school picknick! Keep those fat women away! Especially the ones in the choir! :O)

Zane

MAN! That all sounds pretty normal to me. That's bad, right?

I feel your pain bro. It's been a multi hospital year for me, latest time involved passing out several times from blood loss due to internal bleeding. That was real strange, I felt pretty good otherwise.

Better now, kinda getting my normal turned back on. So hang in there Zane, we ain't done with you yet!

Glad to hear you are doing better. I agree with the previous poster, we aint done with you yet and neither is God. Also, need you to invent something else with your genius mind. TJ

If you don't mind shooting pool with a rope then sax after 60 is good.

Zane sure am glad you are ok . I knew I should have worked harder at catching up to you back in Oct.
Good luck and Marry Christmas.
Larry

Zane, when you go you're gonna leave a hole in this group that can't be filled. Hugs to your daughter the RN...timing is everything. As for sax after 60...it's just like when the battery runs down on your N...you just got to hand-crank it...or better yet, get somebody else to help. BTDT...!
