Is this engine ready for rings?

Ok got the pistons out and I'm not sure what to look for on the pistons to see if they would be ok to reuse. I did notice the exhaust ring on one of the pistons was broke when I pulled it out the top. The sleeves are very smooth. No cracks or lines that I can feel. The tractor will be used for parades and maybe pulling the manure spreader and JD 290 planter around. Should I go all the way new sleeves and pistons or just hone the sleeves and put new rings on the pistons. I want to do it once and be happy.
It is well worth it to go all new that way for the most part you have a new engine and depending on the kit maybe even a bit more cubic inches and power

Unfortunately the quality of your photos showing the cylinder bores is just not up to par. No bright areas or light shining in from the opposite side of where you took the photo would probably help. This would probably activate the camera flash which would also help. But in all actuality in my opinion for someone to assess something like this through photos is just not really possible. If there were obvious scratches or scoring that would tell someone viewing the photos that there is definitely a problem with one or more cylinders beyond that it is a flip of coin at best. Find somebody to come look at it. Or you really need to replace the sleeve orings no matter what so pull the sleeves and take them to a machine shop to get their evaluation.

I can see on rods 2 and 3 there is what looks like damaged bolt threads. And in picture 4 it looks like you have damage to the crankshaft from the bolt threads hitting the crank on removal. It’s a good idea to slip some rubber hose over the threads as protectors. It’s not the usual thing to lay bolts in the brgs. Since these last 2 are in poor shape don’t really matter. But it’s a heads up never do that with new brgs. There is mechanics out there that will not allow you to even touch a dry brg surface with your fingers. Plus check the wrist pins for wear. No sideways movement. Or an experienced person can help
You out here also. Same with the sleeves. Plus same with the pistons to check the ring lands wear. Just as a visual from what I can see they don’t look ready to junk yet. Same with the sleeves u can remove a ring from the piston and put it at the top
Of the ring travel them measure the end gap with a feeler gauge and do this at the bottom of the sleeve. Then take a new ring and do the same thing. With new sleeves and rings the spec is from .003-.004 for every inch of bore. And this being used sleeves you will be over that. An easy way to check things out your self with out have all the fancy measuring tools. But of course a machine shop can do the measuring and honing but that costs money also. Just a few things to look into.

With the picture enlarged of the connecting ROD assemblies....second assembly from left........appears to be a prime example of the locking device ... Cotter pin ,lock wire not being fully removed, and the shrapnel has buggered the threads...

What are the inside readings of the liners both parallel to the crankshaft and perpendicular to the crankshaft. Taken at three points in the area the piston travels in the linner.
Say one inch down from the top of the liner...then mid travel ,then one inch up from the bottom of the piston travel

I am quite sure Dave has no way to do that in-depth measuring. Actually I don’t think anyone that posts here has them tools as you have. It’s like in a coffee shop they look up specs. Post them for the guys , but as far as hands on experience it is very limited here, and when u post that stuff they don’t understand it anyhow nor would be able to read them mic’s.

I do, and know how. Jim

Farmall Dave: cheapest and not -too- time consuming way to assess the useability of your sleeves is to order a set of standard rings for one piston, and place them down in the cylinder and measure the ring gap. You should hone it first so that you’re measuring the true diameter of the cylinder. The ring gap will basically be your go/no-go gauge.

Like several others, I have them and use them, as well as a Starrett cylinder gauge.

I'm still adding to my tool collection and also learning a lot. Im reading and watching videos when I need some guidance on things and reading all the appreciated responses. I'm going to measure the inside of the sleeves today.

What sleeve and piston kit should I get for this old girl?

Hard to say with out knowing what you will be doing with it. There are the stock ones where it brings it back to what it was in HP and there are the over bore ones which give it a bit more HP
Just driving around the yard maybe a parade stuff like that.

I thought u were going to hone them and do the measuring thing then u know if to spend big money or not. They don’t look that bad to me. And for just yard work it hardly justifies new sleeves and pistons. At least put a new ring at the top of ring travel then down at the bottom and that gives you a pretty good idea if they need to be replaced. If at the bottom u have .016 and .020 at the top you sure don’t need sleeves. Remember sleeves wear on a taper , with the most wear at the top so u understand what I am talking about.
