Have a John Deere 50. Tractor has been a good runner.
Started it today, Started right up. Ran for about 10
minutes and died. Would not restart.

Tractor sat for about 90 minutes and started right up.
Drove back to the barn , 10 minutes or so and it died. Let
it set for about 15 minutes and it restarted. Ran for about
5 minutes and it began to die. Pulled out the choke and it
helped. Pushed Cooke in and the tractor died.

Hello Whitetail welcome to YT! I am not a JD guy I run the
red ones. I can give you some suggestions of what I
would look for with those symptoms. First I believe
those carbs have drain cocks on them. Open it up does
it run a continuous stream out even after a couple
minutes to drain what is the carb bowl? If it slows down
to a drip you have to figure out why and where the fuel
flow is blocked. Like in the strainer or sediment bowl
maybe even inside the tank. Second, I would check the
point gap to make sure they are set properly. Then
maybe I would try a different condenser, do you have
any old ones laying around? I would try those before a
new one. These new ones do not seem to be very
reliable. Last would be to try a new coil. Look a bit
down the page on the post about the JD 70. I put a link
in that post to the John Deere manufacturer topic
section here on YT. I would recommend reposting this
in that forum if my suggestion about fuel flow or the
point setting is not your problem.

I drained both the bowl from the tank and off the carburetor. A small amount of sediment in the tank bowl. Replaced both plugs. Tractor started right up, but had to manipulate the choke to keep it running.

Re-drained the bowl off the carburetor. Added some C-Foam to the fuel. Will pull the bowl off the carburetor tomorrow. Definitely a carburetor issue. Thanks for everyone ms help and input.

Try a different condenser. I had the same problems with my JD 50 this summer. Black exhaust smoke when it re-starts tells you that it is an ignition problem.

After trying to work around the carburetor problem, it came to that the carb solution would be to rebuild it. That is what I did. Remove the carburetor, its a duplex type and had somebody rebuild it with a carburetor kit from John Deere. I reinstalled it back on the John Deere 50. the solution was evident as soon as it started. Had minor adjustments on the carb and it once again was running the way it used to. There was a fair amount of rust and contaminants that were found when the carburetor was torn apart.
