Just acquired a 9N

Hello. My name is Jeremy and I recently acquired what the seller said was a 9n. It was under a thousand and running so I thought it was a no brainer since we’re looking at purchasing a small 4 acre farm. My dad had an 8n when I was a kid and the simplicity of the workings of the tractor is what drew me to it. I have never tore into one but I am about to start that journey. I’m hoping being a mechanic in the army helps some. It came with a box blade and an earth scoop. I don’t know much about using either one but I want to learn.

Your story mirrors ours. We bought our 2N in 1987 in anticipation of buying our 15 acres of bare land. It turned out to be a VERY good decision.
In the years since, the 2N has done everything we have asked from it. Our place was 12 feet deep in blackberry's and scotch broom. Using a very heavy-duty 4" brush hog, (Mowhawk) we cleared much of the land. Because the 9N hydraulic system does not have position control, many will tell you that you cannot use a post hole auger. We have drilled hundreds of holes with ours. I hope you have as much fun with yours!

The hydraulics stopped working after the previous owner “changed the oil” so I’m going to have to troubleshoot that. I also need to rebuild the carb because it’s leaking. Gonna paint it ford blue and white once I get the mechanical issues all fixed.

What is the lever on the left side? Not the pto. The other one? A different auxiliary hi lo?

PTO is under your knee on the left side of the Trans. The one in question looks like it has linkage back to the rear...

Edit: linkage does go to the opposite side of the normal PTO lever

If you magnify and lighten the picture, it clearly shows a rod connecting the mid point of the chrome knob (added lever) to the top (ball) of the normal PTO lever.

Caution! If the P.O. changed the oil and now it won't lift, check the oil level. It's all one sump, transmission, hydraulics and differential.
Great find though. we hope you get a lot of good use out of it.

"IF" you reach a point, that includes the removal of the TOP cover...as per pictures......then these pics may assist you..
Pics are of my 2-N that was suffering from "Previous owner syndrome". After a good cleaning all works as it should...
All the best with your project......:) And welcome to "YT"
