Poor connection

thanks for the diagram wired up and it cranked . thank you Lord
That sounds good.

Just a bit of common terminology for you. Cranking an engine used to be done by hand with a crank. currently to most mechanics when you say it cranked that means the starter turned the engine over. If the engine starts and continues to run without the starter engaged, the engine is said to be running. I am going with the theory that when you said "it cranked", you meant the engine was running.

No load it on a trailer and get it to the Vocational school for proper wiring and getting the safety switch operating. Get them the manual, if you do not have the correct 555 wiring diagram, so they can do it right for you.

yes it cranks drove around the yard. my dad's old international had a crank in front which was scary because I was always afraid it would hit my arm. now can I ask another question.

It Cranked and it started, now you should say: it RUNS and you drove it around the yard.

Yes, of course you can ask another question. If it is not related to this wiring issue you might want to start a new thread and not mix it in this one.

I need to test my alternator. I've done it before but don't remember. when you take battery cable off battery post it dies. If you have any ideas is appreciate it. I've got a multimeter and test light.

If you only hooked up the three wires in the diagram, I posted for you to be able to load the tractor onto a trailer and get it to the school, the battery is the only thing supplying the power to start if and power the fuel solenoid, unhooking the battery does the same thing as turning the key off. You will need to use a battery charger to charge the battery until you get it rewired.

Do not lift a battery cable off to test an alternator. It can cause the alternator to spike on voltage and add to your troubles.

If you only hooked up the three wires in the diagram, I posted for you to be able to load the tractor onto a trailer and get it to the school, you will not be able to test your alternator easily. It needs more wiring. You are running the risk of really burning things up if you don't get it re-wired correctly. I don't have a wiring diagram for your 555. I don't know what it has for an alternator. I am not going to try to tell you what to do for wiring sight unseen and end up causing more damage to your tractor.

If you really want the alternator tested at this point, I am going to advise you remove it and take it to an automotive electric repair shop that can run it on a test bench. The vocation school should be able to check it as part of rewiring the tractor for you.
