PTO question

I have an M with a bad bushing at the front end of the PTO shaft. My new question about the PTO is if the PTO shaft has a spline at the front end that is engaged when in use does that bushing do anything when using the PTO ? I hope this makes sense. Ellis

The bushing carries the shaft when disengaged and like you said, the coupling keeps shafts aligned when engaged

To answer your question, when PTO is engaged, the shafts and bushing all turn together. But since it keeps everything in alignment, you may have engagement problems or keeping it engaged during operation. Grab the PTO shaft and see how much end play it has before you take it apart. If it is 3/16 or more, the thrust washer may have been lost at previous repair. Excessive end play will give problems of dropping out of gear.
