Fordson E1A Major engine in a power pack. Many thousands of these engines were sold to companies all over the world for use in industrial applications, this engine was as popular as the Perkins in many cases.
Short-sightedness by the Ford management, in 1964, with the introduction of the 6X range of Ford tractors, immediately closed down that market, even the introduction of engines like the 2701E four cylinder diesel and the 2703E and 2704E six cylinder range did not get it back, even though they were great engines.
The other mistake made was to ban all the Ford tractor and truck dealers from selling or servicing the new engines, although many parts were the same as the tractor and truck, spares had to be purchased through an approved Ford Industrial Dealer. In our case, although we stocked a wide range of spares and could call on our truck division, just down the road for gaskets, if needed, our nearest Ford Industrial dealership was 60 miles away, leading to increased costs and delays when working on combine engines.
