    OK I will get the steel top bearing but that wasnt the reason the top cover wouldn't close up, as it wasn't installed. Do I keep adding shims until I get the required end play?

    I have removed the top tube to replace the upper bearing,it had come apart. The lower bearing (below the ball nut) appears to be missing some of the pieces, Is there a way to replace this bearing without removing the whole steering box assembly? My manual only addresses a major overhaul.

    I will take it off tomorrow and take it back to the generator shop. He has tested it twice and it checks out fine. He is a one man shop and been in business for forty years so he has o good reputation. I have to figure this out it"s a mystery. Gary
