I have 1950 8N with side mount distributor. Still have 6 volt battery/ generator setup. I was having a problem with not charging. Ammeter was showing below zero. I bought a new battery thinking that was the problem. Still below zero. Next I replaced regulator. That improved situation slightly. When I start Henry up now it shows below zero for a short 15 to 20 seconds than I hear a noise from somewhere, not sure what that is but the ammeter jumps but as I increase throttle so does ammeter right up to 30 amps. So now I have charge but to much. Here are some voltages to evalutate
Low idle - Battery voltage=6.49,Ammeter=10amps
Arm Voltage=6.94 ( on regulator)
Mid idle-Battery voltage=6.95,Ammeter=20amps, Arm voltage =7 to 8volts
High Rev- Battery voltage =7.13 Ammeter=30amps, Arm Voltage= 8.5
I have tried a different ammeter and results are the same.Fld terminal on regulator= zero volts. I have checked wires, made sure generator is grounded to regulator but i am at a lost now. Thanks for any suggestions.
