Yesterday I attended an estate auction that was held just NW of Chanute,Kansas...The wind was out of the north and it was pretty cold in the morning, but by 12 noon it was sunny and got in to the upper 50's...The day before it was 70 degrees..Today its 43 and drizzling..The normal high temp today should be 70 degrees....There were 21 tractors and only 2 ran..Half of the other tractors had stuck engines and about half had free engines..Lots had 1-2 flat tires...Everything had to be removed by Monday at 5 PM....

They are going to have another sale at this place on May 7th with 20 plus tractors on it..Most of the tractors were in plain view but 5 or 6 of the family were guarding them like everyone was thieves..They had yellow tape up and you had better not cross it...I talked to several people that said they would not be coming back because of this...They didnt have a real big crowd yesterday..Everyone wondered why they just didnt have one big sale and get it over with but its theirs to do as they please..I wont be back because my first tractor pull is May 7th..

I left the sale a little after 1:30 PM and headed SW and did some exploring ...Heres the last brick store building standing in Benedict,KS..Benedict had 275 residents in 1920 and only has about 60 in 2022.

I'll be back with more pictures..I took my 1991 Ford Ranger that puked out a bunch of automatic tranny fluid 7-8 weeks ago..It ran flawlessly on this 300 mile trip.

I took this picture 12-15 years ago...Its a low water bridge across the Fall River between New Albany and Fredonia,KS..Its neat with the RR bridge over it.I was
within 3-4 miles of it yesterday..

District #59 one room school NW of Fredonia,KS..Brick schools were common in this area because back in the day there were some
large brick factories close by..

Low water bridge across the Fall River south of Benedict,KS...I thought about crossing it for fun but then
came back to my senses and just took a picture..My cell phone was dead so I was on my own yesterday.

This is the Baker Valley school in the 1980's located south of Benedict,KS...It isnt my picture but belongs to
a woman that took pictures of all the one room schools that were still standing near Fredonia 40 years ago...
cvphoto123370.jpg

Heres what the Baker Valley School looked like yesterday..Sadly,just the foundation and steps were left from this magnificent old school....I found several
other schools yesterday with only the foundations left.
cvphoto123371.jpg

On the road to the old Baker Valley school site which is in the trees ahead...I had to move tree limbs to go across
this and then had to straddle 2 ft deep ruts on down a ways..

The Oak Grove one room school hidden away in western MO..I had been unable to find it in 2018...A friend up that way knew where it was and I finally found it last Tuesday...The original desks, black board, and wood stove are still in it.

I have a large farm sale to attend next Saturday in eastern Kansas..

Thanks for posting! I would have had to make several trips with a trailer. Long stripe cub was a deal ... Even stuck.. so was the Farmall A.

(quoted from post at 18:32:39 04/17/22) Those are all really nice pictures. Thankyou for posting them.
itto that! Really enjoyed the old schools & churches.

Hey 1206--I have 4 vehicles on my wish list and one of them is a 47 or older Ford pickup and I see there was one on the sale--Now if I knew about this sale and had you buy it for me and restore it you would have made me very happy!!! But we all have dreams...THANKS 1206---Tee

As I've mentioned here before, I'm a geography nut and always break out my Kansas map (official state map) and travel along with you. It always amazes me how you find these historic places you photograph. I know you have mentioned using state (or county?) historical societies as sources. Whatever you do, it sure brings us some neat photos. I, as always, enjoy them tremendously. Keep up the good work. The tractors on that sale seem like money pits, unless they might be OK as part-out units. Also hope you had a Happy Easter.

Love the photos of the old buildings.

Sad that the old schools are just let go. Many around here have been made into nice little homes.

Thanks for posting the pictures and prices. The information you provided is about half the reason I go to a sale - you saved me 4 hours driving and 4 more hours of standing around!

They are going to have another sale at this place on May 7th with 20 plus tractors on it..Most of the tractors were in plain view but 5 or 6 of the family were guarding them like everyone was thieves.

Its sad how these people let everything go to pot (all the locked up engines and the pack rat nests in the trucks) then act like they are selling a pot of gold. If they cared so much how hard was it to put can over a muffler or occasionally rotate an engine to keep from seizing up - much less put them in running condition the day of the sale. Had they of run I easily see every tractor price tripling - even if they ran poorly.

Thanks once again for all the Kansas updates. I love the old buildings......and especially the low water crossings. They look perfect for my old 1953 Willys Jeep and my new grandson in the passenger seat. Thanks again
