I spent the day Sunday working on my service truck putting new brakes on the rear, along with putting in a new brake controller so I can tow my trailer with it. Usually when I am working in the field I take my wedding ring off and hang it on a toggle switch on the dash of the truck. When I am working around the shop I tend to stick it in my pocket with my change.
I've been doing this for nearly 7 years now and have never had a problem until today. In this case I put it in my pocket this morning when I got down to the shop. I worked on the truck all day, lying under it running wires for brake controller, doing the rear brakes, and several other minor projects. When I got cleaned up this evening to head in I reached into my pocket and my ring was gone.
I spent the next 10 minutes on my knees looking around in the dirt under where I was working on the truck, and came up empty handed. I knew it had to be there, and what surprised me was I actually had a huge piece of cardboard laid down to work on and I never saw it hit the cardboard, even though I did see a nickel and a dime at one point. In other words I knew if the change came out the same had to have happened to my ring.
I wound up getting my metal detector out and found it on the first sweep, only inches from where I stopped looking when I was on my knees a little earlier.
The whole incident had one good thing come of it as my wife actually saw how important it was to me....Not that she didn't know already, but it just reinforced the fact for her.....
Now my question. What do ya'll do with your rings when your working? Like I said, I've got a place for it when I'm working on a job site, and I've got my pocket for around home, but as today proved, the pocket isn't as secure as I have thought it was. My wife got me a necklace to wear it on when we first got married because she knew it wasn't good for me to wear it while I was working. I tried it for a week or so, but the first time it got hung on something and about took the skin off my finger I knew that wasn't going to happen. So, I tried the necklace idea, but when I stood on my head to get to something down in a hole the first time, I discovered that wasn't going to work either. So, into the pocket it went. Now I just need to find something else that works so I don't lose it again.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
