    Dead Starter?

Well color my face in shmootz! After cleaning the posts and clamps first off and getting no joy I then did all of the afore mentioned things. Today in a desperit move I decided to clean the batt posts again, and this time I used my old Monkey Wards post scrubber and really laid into them, then...

    Dead Starter?

Been away for a long time cuz' my tractors been healthy and well, until a few days ago. went to start it and the solenoid clicked once and then absolute silence. Did all the usual, checked the battery for charge, good. Checked all connections for continuity and cleanliness, good. replaced the...

    What am I doing wrong??

While I did cut them flush I had hoped that the paper oil pan gasket would kind of act like a filler, or at least act like I left them proud. The oil is coming out in drips and quite a lot, but, the last time I moved the tractor into the barn there were less drips in the dirt so maybe they are...

    What am I doing wrong??

Rebuilt the engine on my 51 8N. Runs like a champ, except for the oil leaks at the two rope seals. I soaked them for 48 hours in 30 weight, pressed them into place, cut them flush, put on the oil pan gasket,( which extends between the two halves, torqued to specs, and wallah they leak, alot! Why...

    Starter solenoid

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I will check and clean all connections but I suspect that when I painted the block I painted the surface where the starter mates with the block. The starter was'nt installed at the time. Who knew? (Well, you guys did...) I will keep you posted.

    Starter solenoid

Rebuilt the 8N, put the fully charged 6V bat. in, reversed the polarity, turned the key, hit the switch and got only a buzzing noise from the solenoid atop the starter motor. What did I do wrong? Is the thing bad? Worked fine when I tore it down. Any thoughts?

    Piston rod caps

A bit confused here. The book says install the piston rod caps with the numbers to the valve side. I have numbers on both sides of the cap. One says 9N and the other side has a number as well. Shouldn't the bearing lock notches line up with each other and should the notches be on the valve side...

    Honing of sleeves

This is probably a stupid question but after installing new sleeves do I still need to hone them? There is a slight crosshatch pattern visible but I am concerned it isnt enough. I"d just as soon leave well enough alone but please advise if I need to hone more. Don"t know what"s too much or...

    Piston pin bushings

Thanks Bob, Once I cleaned the rods and removed the rust and gunk I was able to see the dissimilar metals. I do indeed have access to a machinest who can remove the bushings and press the new ones in. In case anyone reads this why would an engine that is serial numbered for an 8N have 9N piston...

    Piston pin bushings

I received new piston pin bushings with my rebuild kit. Upon disassembly of the pistons, it "appears" that there are no bushings in the rods. What gives? Do some rods have them and some don't? The new pins fit the rods but I don't want to reassemble incorrectly cuz, well, that would be bad. I...

    wire

I am reassembling my 8N engine and at various places wire is threaded through bolt heads. I"ve heard this is referred to as "machinest"s wire". Is this some type of "special" wire with special properties I"m unaware of or can any wire be substituted. Can it be aquired at any automotive shop?

    Oilpump bushing

Is there a safe way to get the oil pump bushing out of the pump? And, how does one get the new one in, and, get it lined up with the lubrication hole, all without destroying the thing? Will this somehow involve my freezer as with the sleeves? Please, please don"t tell me I need some expensive...

    adjustable tappet adjusting

I just got my 8N engine block back from hot-tanking and my machinist added a little alteration. He said that the wrenches that you buy for adjusting tappets have a tendency to break, so he drilled a small hole in the housing that holds the tappet. He said I will be able to stick a pin punch in...
