    1948 8n value

My 8n has 4 new tires. Also wheel weights on all 4. All parts are put together and tractor reassembled. Has a cracked block. Any idea what it is worth?

    Sleeve removal suprise

When I removed #2 liner I saw rust. After cleaning the area I revealed a 4" long crack! Now what? I guess I now have a parts 8n.

    Crank journal size math

So I understand that the std crank Journal size is 2.488. For easy math I used 3 decimal places to get a rough idea. My crank shells have a #'676 010. My crank measurements are 2.242 front, 2.242 middle, and 2.244 rear. I did the math but not sure if the numbers are correct for a .010 under...

    Valves seats 8n

Finally got all my stuck valves out! I kinda roughed up some of the springs and guides. So I think I should buy all new. Would the seats be 30 intake and 45 exhaust angles? I'm not sure what the book means when they say 90 included angle.

    Bearing shells question

I was measuring my crank bearing shells thickness. They are .010 under. l noticed they are very close to 0.100 thick. Would .010 under shells be 0.100 thick when new? Crank end play is to the wear limit. Will new properly sized shells correct this?

Small tube next to cam shaft.

A small metal tube parallels the cam shaft. I'm guessing it is a oil distribution line. Right in the middle of it there is a gob of yellow sealant. Was that sealant put there by the manufacture to prevent vibration? No reference to this in the book so it may not be important.

    Sleeve size

Ya, I know another question about sleeves that has been answered many times. Sleeves have a flange on the head end. So if I get .090 on the flange that is my size. Just checking so I don't make a mistake.

    Crank mains minimum dia

My 8N manual does not give me the minimum diameter for the crank mains or the connecting rod journals. They have measurements for the out of round and taper. I think minimum diameter would be given. I know the clearance so I will use plasti gauge.

    Releasing valve retainers

Do I just use that bent screw driver looking tool to release the valve retainers? Or that other tool that looks like it compresses the springs? 1948 FORD 8N with rotating valves.

    Out of round liners

My 8n liners are out of round by as much as ,010 or more. I know this happens from normal wear. Does worn crank bearings have any thing to do with that much out of round? My liners have a little lip on the inside top. Or is the lip just where the piston stops? Gotta buy better calipers. Thanks

    Crank pulley bolt

Would it be ok to change slotted bolt for a regular fine threaded bolt?

    8n engine weight

Do we have a estimated weight on a 8n stripped engine with head and pan on. I want to be setup with the right equipment. Thanks

    Sloppy pistons 8n

Finally pulled the head on my low compression 8n. I was suprised because you could put your fingers on the pistons and wiggle them around in their bore! In fact I could fit a .014 feeler gauge between the piston and the bore. Didn't ever think a engine could get so loose.

    Front cover 8n

I need to remove the front cover on my Ford 8N. I won't be losing any engine oil. Right? Thanks ..

    8n compression restored

After weeks of ATF soaking and other adjustments I now have 50 psi on all cylinders. Been thinking I should try to start the old 8n again. Will it run with 50 psi?

Crank pulley very close to front cover.

Still looking into my 8n sudden death problem. My crank pulley back side only clears front cover by .003 inch. Odd observation I know. Seems like a little more would be desirable. Maybe another clue to a worn or failed part.

    Crank gear key

I was reading old posts about the crank gear getting loose from a worn key on the 8n. So if this happens your gear timing can become out of time. Am I correct in thinking this loose/slipping crank gear could cause low compression. Just like if the cam gear gets out of time. The engine can't run...

    Hand crank 8n

I will be building a hand crank for my 8n. Would be handy for repair work valves etc. I see how they are built. I looked in at the crank pulley and I see a big screw driver slot. Guess I will try some different configurations.

    1948 8N low compression

Great forum, thanks everybody. I have read almost all posts that deal with low compression problems on the 8n. Wet compression test was not any better than dry. #1=25 #2=25 #3=0 #4=25. I had soaked all holes in MMO for a week. Valves all move and are not tight. With #1 up #4 seems to be...
